Kentucky Breaks Single Day Record For COVID-19 Related Deaths

Coronavirus briefings by Governor Beshear continue to include references to somber new records.  The governor reported Wednesday 37 additional COVID deaths, the most over a one day period.

State Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack said local, state, and federal data collection is challenging. “There are so many electronic labs coming in to those systems.  There are so many people operating the state system and local health departments and the state health department.  And the federal government system is having the same challenges,” said Stack.

Stack said modeling shows that better compliance of COVID-19 preventive measures like mask wearing, social distancing, and staying home when sick would bring down hospitalization numbers significantly.  Governor Beshear noted statewide hospitalizations and intensive care numbers had declined slightly.

Stack said the number of patients in intensive care has tripled over the last two months, but treatments have helped to keep some people out of ICU.  “Numbers are still going up and as the numbers go up we’ll still have more in the ICU than we did before, but as a proportion, the number of people in the ICU is less relative to the total people in the hospital,” noted Stack.

Governor Beshear said he still expects indoor dining at Kentucky restaurants and bars to resume in mid-December albeit at a lower capacity than previous limits.
