The second season at the Eastern Kentucky University Center for the Arts begins next week with a performance by the world-renowned Cincinnati Pops. On Tuesday, the orchestra, under the leadership of John Morris Russell, presents a show being called “Summon the Heroes," a celebration of America honoring the heroes of 9/11 and our nation’s storied history. Maestro Russell took the baton of the Cincinnati Pops following the 2009 passing of his predecessor, Erich Kunzel. He tells John Hingsbergen that, while using the same musicians as the Cincinnati Symphony, the Pops is different.
Among the musical numbers on the Cincinnati Pops’ playlist for September 11th are Alan Silvestri’s "Captain America," Aaron Copland’s "Boatmen’s Dance," "Strutter’s Ball," written by Shelton Brooks, music from Jekyll & Hyde, Ragtime and the Theme from Supergirl and, of course, a salute to the US Armed Forces.
Maestro John Morris Russell says, in addition to regular concerts in the Cincinnati area and on the road such as the show at the EKU Center, the group continues to make recordings available to its fans around the world.
