Gov. Andy Beshear said Fayette County Public Schools and Superintendent Demetrus Liggins need a “clean break” following months of turmoil over the district’s budget crisis.
Beshear’s remarks came at the end of Thursday’s Team Kentucky update.
“We are far past the point of no return where Fayette County Public Schools and Demetrus Liggins need to have a clean break,” Beshear said.
Liggins has been on paid leave since early June, though the Fayette County Board of Education has not given specific reasons, instead appointing an interim, Bill Bradford, to the post.
Several audits and investigations have uncovered nearly two decades of financial mismanagement, and one found Liggins directly violated district policy.
“The back and forth between Liggins and Fayette County Public Schools is not productive,” Beshear said. “We need to just make that break and move on.”
Liggins has contested much of the action taken against him, filing open meetings complaints against the district.
