At 94, Texas Mayor Decides To Step Down

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep congratulating Olive Stephens who was elected mayor of Shady Shores, Texas in 1972. Richard Nixon was president and the TV show "Dallas" had yet to premiere. Thirty-nine years late, Mayor Stephens is preparing to retire this month, leaving office at age 94. She has outlasted most world leaders. Moammar Gadhafi is one of the few who remain from 1972, though Mayor Stephens hasn't retired yet. There's still time.
