Kentucky is expanding its African American Heritage Trail. These sites celebrate and showcase African Americans’ contributions to both Kentucky and the nation. The trail was first unveiled in June 2025, featuring more than 50 historic sites and attractions.
In October 2025, the public was invited to submit nominations for new sites to be considered for the trail. Applications were received and considered by a review committee, which took into account both the historical significance and the potential to enhance the visitor experience.
During a press conference late last week, Governor Andy Beshear stated that more people need to be aware of these stories.
“Black history is American history. Black history is Kentucky history, but for much of our history, it has been overlooked and underappreciated. We must honor the incredible contributions that African Americans have made by sharing the stories that otherwise have not been told.”
Governor Beshear said this is part of Kentucky's plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
“With these additions, we are now more than 60 sites on the trail, and I encourage everyone to take the time to visit. America 250 is going to be a great opportunity to remember our history, especially the aspects that have been overlooked for far too long.”
Ten new sites have been added to the trail, including the Charles Young Center in Lexington.
Young was a Kentucky native and the first Black man to earn the rank of colonel in the U.S. military. He was posthumously promoted to Brigadier General in 2022 in a ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
One of the other sites added to the trial is the Elisha Green Memorial in Maysville.
Green was a former slave who became a Baptist minister and activist. He promoted the establishment of the Simmons College of Kentucky.
