Overnight lows are expected to dip into single digit and negative temperatures through this weekend, and the National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for most of the Commonwealth. Wind chills could bring those temperatures down to around 20 below zero some nights.

NWS hydrologist Pete Geogerian said that could depend on how much cloud cover Kentucky’s skies get.

“If the clouds stay in, we'll probably bottom out in the single digits,” he said. “But for any place that has a good snowpack down that can see clearing skies and calming winds, the temperature will go below zero.”

The NWS is asking Kentuckians to check on their most vulnerable neighbors in the meantime. Exposure to freezing temperatures can cause hypothermia or frostbite.

““Check on neighbors, check on elderly. Make sure your pets are indoors for this kind of cold, because it's just harmful, obviously. Hypothermia can set in very quickly in these kinds of temperatures,” Geogerian said.

PowerOutage.us reports more than 35,000 Kentuckians, mostly in the state’s southern region, are still without power as of Thursday afternoon.

The ice and snow currently on the ground will stay put until temperatures are high enough for it to melt. The NWS says more snow could fall Tuesday and Wednesday, but not enough for it to accumulate.
