KSP investigates Eastern Kentucky inmate’s death

Samantha Morrill

Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex.

Marcus D. Gray, 49, of Corbin, died at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Correctional officers found Gray unresponsive in his cell on Sunday and attempted to revive him, according to KSP.

Gray was transported to a local hospital in Morgan County, then transferred to Lexington.

A preliminary investigation by KSP found that Gray was assaulted by a fellow inmate, but no charges have been filed.

The case will be presented to the Morgan County Grand Jury.

The prison is a medium-security facility in West Liberty that opened in 1990. It houses around 2,000 inmates.

Two inmates at the facility died last year, according to KSP.

KSP is investigating the death of Robert A. Boyles, 34, of Louisville. Corrections officers found Broyles unresponsive in his cell on Aug. 31. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

KSP is also investigating the death of Ryan Rayburn, 27, of Ashcamp. Corrections offices found Rayburn unresponsive in his cell on Sept. 30. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
