Winter weather continues as snow and bitter cold temperatures are expected to hit the commonwealth over the weekend and into early next week.
Governor Andy Beshear has activated the Emergency Operations Center, so the Kentucky Emergency Management team will be ready to respond along with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
During his Team Kentucky update, the governor said it is expected to get extremely cold in the coming days.
“Right now the forecast is calling for 1-to-3 inches of additional snow during that period,” he said. “Following that system, dangerously cold temperatures are moving into the region Sunday. Wind chills will be below zero or near zero.”
The governor said Kentuckians need to have a plan in place should the worst happen.
“Keep your phone charged, have blankets and warm clothing, and have a plan to get to a warm place if your heat goes out. If you need to use a generator, keep it outdoors, and don't use a generator unless you have a carbon monoxide monitor in your home.”
The governor also said emergency teams are working with local counties to open warming centers where they are needed.
Roadways are also expected to be heavily impacted, and officials have urged travelers to use extreme caution if they must get out on the roads.
