The final numbers are in, and Lexington gave big to “Lexington’s Big Give” food drive. Nearly 106,000 pounds of food, plus $6,000 in monetary donations to God’s Pantry Food Bank.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton launched the citywide food drive on Nov. 3, following concerns raised by leaders of her Social Services Department about Family Care Center families' need for food assistance. Several government divisions helped collect the donations at drop-off spots all over town.
“These are great results; however, I’m not surprised,” Gorton said in a press release. “Lexington always comes through in a big way. Lexington gives and cares whenever we put out the call to help others.”
Anna Russell, Community Engagement Director for God’s Pantry, called the month-long community initiative a “huge success.”
Those partners include the Mayor’s Office, Lexington Fire Department, Lexington Police Department, Lexington Division of Emergency Management, other Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government divisions, God’s Pantry Food Bank, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Fayette County Clerk’s Office.
God’s Pantry Food Bank supports the needs of nearly 280,000 people across Central and Eastern Kentucky. The organization began operations in Lexington in 1955 and opened its first pantry in 1959.
