The former mayor of London, Kentucky, who was removed from office a week ago by the city council, has filed an appeal in Laurel Circuit Court. Carmine G. Iaccarino is the attorney representing Randall Weddle in the case.
“We believe they violated the Open Meetings Act in the build-up to the hearing and ultimately at the hearing itself. And Kentucky law very clearly calls for transparency and collegial bodies doing the work of the people,” he said.
The city council unanimously agreed on three counts of willful misconduct or negligence: signing a $5 million mortgage without council approval, not filling vacancies on the city’s ethics board in a timely fashion, and refusing to publish an enacted ordinance and delaying its timely publication. Iaccarino said the charges don’t warrant such a drastic action.
“The charges that the city council of London used in an attempt to remove Mayor Weddle amount to nothing more than petty grievances and policy disagreements.”
Iaccarino said he hopes the court will hear the appeal as soon as possible. Before the suit was filed, Weddle pledged to run again in November of 2026.
WEKU was unable to reach a private attorney representing the city council for comment.
