The National Weather Service says heavy rainfall could result in localized flash flooding across eastern and northern Kentucky through this weekend.

The NWS says major flooding isn’t expected, but low lying areas and poor drainage systems could easily flood.

“That's what the bigger concern is, is when you start to get inundation of roadside ditches and water into the roadways, it's, ‘Turn around, don't drown,’” Jackson NWS meteorologist Alex Vorst said. “Don't drive through a flooded roadway. If you see rushing water over a road, don't drive through it.”

The service says Thursday evening’s severe thunderstorms are the worst of the current weather system. The region is under a marginal-to-slight risk of storms during the weekend.

Vorst says to stay weather aware, avoid driving through flooded roadways and to seek higher ground if flooding gets bad enough.
