Natural gas plant to be built in Casey County following Public Service Commission approval

Ryan Van Velzer

A new natural gas plant is set to be built in Casey County after the project’s approval by the Public Service Commission.

It’s being built by the East Kentucky Power Cooperative. It’s planned to take up a site of around 100-acres, north of the town of Liberty. The co-op expects it to generate more than 200 megawatts of power at its peak.

That comes amid a wider push by the co-op to build more natural gas plants. It’s also proposed a new plant at its station in Somerset. It’s also converting existing coal plants in Somerset and Mason County to also use natural gas.

The co-op expects the Casey County plant to be operational by late 2028. Construction will begin in the fall of next year.
