The winner of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby grew up in Woodford County. Sovereignty was foaled at Gainsborough Farm and spent his first seven months there, before moving to Dubai Millenium Farm in Midway. Both are owned by Sheikh Mohammad’s Godolphin. Monday, Gainsborough Farm manager Danny Mulvihill said they’re on Cloud 9.
“Everybody here at Godolphin and at Gainesborough are super proud. It's one horse every year gets to win the Derby, and this year it's our turn. So we will enjoy it for what it is, and hopefully we get to see more good days ahead with this horse.”
A Godolphin filly, Good Cheer, won the Kentucky Oaks Friday. She was foaled at Stonerside Farm in Bourbon County. Mulvihill said Sovereignty was big and boisterous from the day he was born.
“Every foal that's born, same as any farm, the hopes and dreams are alive from the day he's born. And you know, this is one of the goals that we've got, was to win the Kentucky Derby for our boss, Sheik Mohammed, and for our founder and that is one of the major races in the world that he has not won. Well, now he's checked that box.”
Mulvihill said while everyone at Gainsborough and Godolphin is on cloud 9, the work continues. A few minutes after returning late Saturday night, they were called to the foaling barn.
