Governor clears up confusion regarding REAL IDs for Kentuckians

REAL IDs will be needed for some travel and building access after Wednesday. Governor Beshear made it a point to remind Kentuckians that this is not a deadline, but a federal enforcement date.

The governor recently said there has been some confusion regarding the REAL ID, and he wanted to clarify any misconceptions.

“I don't want people confused that you have to have a REAL ID just in general by that time, we're going to keep issuing them after May 7th. I'm getting mine after May 7th because there are other options that allow you to board an airplane.”

Governor Beshear said if Kentuckians do not have their REAL ID, they have other options for airlines and federal buildings until they do.

“Those are a passport, a passport card, global entry card, military ID, a veteran health identification card. Those are among the different types of IDs that will satisfy the federal government.”

Governor Beshear said with the May 7th date approaching, and recent changes to state law regarding driving permits, and the requirement for eye exams, there may be long waits at driver's license offices.

More information about the REAL ID can be found here.
