U.S. Representative and Senate hopeful Andy Barr echoed much of President Donald Trump’s policies during a Tuesday event kicking off his campaign.
Barr formally announced his bid for Senator Mitch McConnell’s seat on social media Tuesday afternoon, hosting an event in Richmond shortly after. The former Senate majority leader is retiring at the end of his term next year.
During the event, Barr called for cutting taxes, more coal production, deportation of undocumented immigrants, ending DEI initiatives and supporting federal DOGE cuts.
“The liberals are whining like crazy because their pet projects and their wasteful DEI programs are all getting cut. In the Senate, I'll fight every day to stop spending money on programs we don't need with money we don't have,” Barr said.
Barr said in a media interview after the event that he’s asked for President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
“I’d be honored to have it, and I continue to work to earn it. And that's what I said to the President,” he said.
Barr will be running against former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron in the GOP primary. Trump endorsed Cameron during his failed run for governor in 2023. Lexington business owner Nate Morris has also hinted at entering the race.
