The Trump Administration is deporting people who they describe as terrorists, gang members, and illegal aliens.

There are reports of people having no criminal record or gang affiliation being caught up in sweeps and sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador.

The deportations have Kentucky’s immigrant population concerned for their safety.

Nima Kulkarni is a Kentucky State Representative and immigration lawyer. She said these deportation actions are expanding.

“Non-immigrant visa holders, including students and temporary workers. We saw it extending to green card holders who had been residing in the U.S. For a long time and, in fact, more recently, individuals who were eligible for citizenship being apprehended during a citizenship interview.”

She said this is not about immigration and immigrants anymore, and everyone should be concerned.

“Under the guise of immigration enforcement, many, many of our constitutional norms are being violated and we have to be vigilant about what information is being given to who, and for what end. We need to understand that none of us are safe if those rights are not secured.”

Kulkarni, who immigrated to the U.S. as a child, said many of the policies coming out of Washington are constantly changing. She said this keeps people in a state of fear and uncertainty.
