Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services says a program that helps low-income households pay their energy bills isn’t currently affected by federal cuts.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cut all federal staff to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, earlier this month. Congress gave more than $4 billion to the program last fiscal year.
The state cabinet says it hasn’t received any notice that its funding has been affected.
An emailed statement to WEKU says “any cuts to federal programs that serve Kentuckians would be devastating to families who need assistance in challenging times.”
The state program sent more than $24 million to more than 70,000 households during its winter crisis period last year.
The spring subsidy period for LIHEAP opened earlier this week. Those eligible can apply by reaching out to their local Community Action Center.
