The first groundbreaking in the state for a medical cannabis cultivation and production facility was held Monday in southern Kentucky. Monticello Mayor Kenny Catron said Centaurus Farms’ operation will be on an 86-acre site at the Monticello-Wayne County Industrial Authority.
“We were just lucky as a community to have a build-ready pad. You know, we had all the utilities in place, and we had voted to be able to, you know, have the sales here, so we had everything in place for them where a lot of communities didn't.”
Catron said the city already had a reputation for producing marijuana.
“We were in High Times magazine a lot, but that was illegal-type marijuana, but never, you know, legal sales like this.”
Catron said the company will begin operations in January and hire 100 people for good-paying jobs, with more possible down the road.
