FEMA’s disaster recovery center in Harlan County is closing down.
It’s the first such center out of 17 to close in eastern Kentucky. FEMA opened recovery centers across the region to help victims of February’s severe storms. The centers help victims with flood relief assistance.
FEMA spokesperson Danny Bernardy says the agency made the decision with the state and the county.
“As recovery increases and the need sort of dwindles a little bit in a particular area, we’ll make determinations in coordination with the Commonwealth and the county as to whether or not there's a need for that particular disaster recovery center,” Bernardy said.
FEMA spokesperson Danny Bernardy says no other centers are scheduled to close.
“That would all depend on the ongoing analysis that is made with the Commonwealth and at the county level, depending on the recovery, as the recovery increases, and where the need is,” Bernardy said.
Assistance is also available online, by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 or by downloading the mobile app. The deadline to apply is April 25.
