Nick Whitaker announced Thursday that Gov. Beshear had selected him to fill the remainder of the term of slain Letcher District Judge Kevin Mullins.

An eastern Kentucky attorney says he’s Governor Beshear’s choice to replace slain Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins.

Nick Whitaker made the announcement on his Facebook page Thursday night, writing that the governor had called him with the news the day before. Whitaker said he’d been a pretrial release officer, supervised people in drug court and was presently assistant commonwealth’s attorney. He said he’d begun finishing work there and at his private practice, but it would take a little time before he could take the oath of office. WEKU left messages for Whitaker asking for an interview.

The governor’s office did not respond to an email asking for confirmation of Whitaker’s appointment.
