FEMA representatives are contacting survivors from last month’s severe storms as the disaster assistance period continues.
FEMA says they’re calling for a number of different reasons. That includes issues with applications, following up on needs or to schedule home inspections for damage. They could also be calling those in need of temporary housing.
Those calls could come from unknown phone numbers or area codes. FEMA spokesperson Craig Browning says it’s important for victims to pick up the phone no matter what.
“They'll make three attempts to reach you. If after that third attempt, they have not been able to reach you, or you have not returned the phone call, your application will essentially just be put on pause,” Browning said.
Browning says if you’re unsure if the caller is really a representative, reach out to its helpline to verify if the caller is legitimate.
“FEMA does not charge for any of our services. So if someone calls or shows up on your property claiming to be FEMA, we ask, and we feel like it's just a good measure to verify who you're talking to,” Browning said.
The deadline to apply for assistance is April 25.
