Prestonsburg Mayor Rick Hughes says flooding in Archer Park is the worst that community staple has seen in more than four decades.

The Trump Administration’s major disaster declaration for the February flood means local governments and citizens in 11 Kentucky counties can apply for federal assistance. Floyd County was added to the list Tuesday. Rick Hughes is the mayor of the county seat of Prestonsburg.

“Our Archer Park – I call it the staple of the community. Everybody seems to have grown up somewhere through Archer Park. It took a big lick, the first time since ‘84 that it had made it to the office area, and it was over three feet into the office area,” Hughes said.

The public assistance portion of the major disaster declaration could make Archer Park eligible for federal funds. Meantime, Hughes said everybody is lending a helping hand in the recovery effort.

“It has been great to see everybody come together and, and it's more of a, ‘What can we do for you?’ I mean, it's not, ‘I'm only doing, you know, my lot, you know, I'm not messing with yours.’ Everybody is lending a helping hand. And that means a lot right there, when you have that kind of support.”

Hughes said flooding from the Big Sandy River was particularly bad in the Lancer and Goble Roberts communities.
