More than 1,000 rescues and at least eight confirmed deaths have been reported as a result of widespread flooding throughout Kentucky.

Gov. Andy Beshear says emergency officials are in their search and rescue phase as recovery efforts begin. Swiftwater boat teams, state police and the National Guard are among those leading the efforts.

Beshear says to limit travel in the meantime. Around 300 federal and state roads were blocked Sunday because of damage and debris. Even more are affected by standing water.

“Give time for the water to go down. So many of these fatalities were due to attempts to drive through water and through moving water,” he said.

State leaders say nearly 40,000 power outages and 9,800 water outages have been reported statewide as of Sunday afternoon. Two nursing homes have been evacuated out of caution, including the Landmark Nursing Home in Elkhorn City.

More snow and freezing temperatures are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, which could delay recovery. Twelve emergency shelters are open across eastern Kentucky in the meantime.

State parks are also housing some evacuees. Beshear says 142 people were being housed as of Sunday afternoon, with availability at Pine Mountain, Cumberland Falls and Natural Bridge State Parks. Jenny Wiley State Park is housing 86 adults and 56 children.

Beshear also reminded those affected to only call 911 during a life-threatening emergency. For other emergency situations like power outages or medical needs, call 502-607-6665 or fill out a form online.
