According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday’s rain and snow is just the start of potentially problematic weather. Samantha Wilson is a meteorologist with the service’s Louisville office, which covers much of central and southern Kentucky. She said starting Wednesday, expect lots of rain for several days.
“With multiple rounds of rain, we could see in southern Kentucky upwards of five to six inches of rain. So without any dry periods or substantial dry periods in between these rounds of rain, we can definitely see some flooding, especially along our rivers, start to pop up.”
In eastern Kentucky, the forecast is much the same. Jane Marie Wix, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Jackson office, said multiple systems are on the way, and they’ll arrive with the ground already saturated.
“When you already have saturated soils and you already have soils that don't have as much vegetation on them, because it's wintertime right now, it doesn't take as much rain to cause runoff and to cause flooding.”
Wix said we’re likely to get a bit of a break Friday, but by Saturday, another low-pressure system with plenty of rain is expected across the commonwealth.
