The National Weather Service in Jackson says more active weather is expected after severe storms Wednesday night affected much of central and eastern Kentucky.
The National Weather Service says they had reports of road closures and high water in Powell, Menifee and Montgomery Counties. Tornado warnings were also issued throughout southeast Kentucky.
Meteorologist Chuck Greif from the NWS branch in Jackson says the storms mark a period of more active weather into next week.
“It looks like the storm tracks are going to stay over top of us for at least the next week or so, and in that we are looking at rounds of potentially heavy rain, maybe severe thunderstorms, and also even a potential for some snow or wintry weather the first part of next week,” Grief said.
Mt. Vernon in Rockcastle County reported power outages that affected most of downtown.
Rockcastle County superintendent Carrie Ballinger says that affected Mt. Vernon Elementary School.
“The students were fine. They were troopers. We were able to make certain that they received breakfast this morning, and then we went to the other schools and brought food to Mt. Vernon Elementary School to serve them lunch. So all was well,” Ballinger said.
Greif recommends staying “weather aware” and keeping up with the forecast as it continues to change.
