Harlan ARH hospital set to close labor, baby delivery wing

Appalachian Regional Healthcare

The Appalachian Regional Healthcare hospital in Harlan is discontinuing its labor and baby delivery services.

The labor and delivery unit is scheduled to close at the end of the month.

Its obstetrics department, which helps care for women during pregnancy, will stay open through April 30.

Hospital CEO Joe Horton said in a release that the decision was made because of fewer families using the hospital’s services.

He also says the hospital is working with its affected employees to find similar positions, either at the Harlan hospital or at other locations in the regional healthcare network.

The hospital’s emergency department will stay open and available to handle any emergencies relating to pregnancy.
