National Recovery Day looks to advocate for those battling substance use disorder

J. Tyler Franklin

A group of substance use recovery advocates are hosting a rally in Frankfort Wednesday.

People Advocating Recovery is a statewide training organization to help those recovering from substance use disorder. It’s their third year organizing Recovery Advocacy Day at the state capitol.

Multiple state government officials, like Gov. Andy Beshear and Louisville-based state Senator Keturah Herron are part of the gathering.

Group CEO Tara Hyde says it’s a way to celebrate people currently in recovery.

“We want our community members to come out to the capitol, talk to their legislators, let them know that their voice matters, their voice is important to legislators, and it gives them an opportunity to meet with their legislators as well,” Hyde said.

Organizers will also be handing out Narcan and demonstrating how to use the nasal spray to avoid overdoses.
