The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is introducing a new program meant to encourage school districts to buy local produce and meat.

It’s called the Kentucky Farm to School Stars Recognition Program. School districts who sign up will have their purchases monitored by the department for an entire school year.

The three school districts buying the highest percentage of locally grown food will be recognized with cash awards.

The first place school district will get $10,000, second place will get $8,000 and third place will get $6,000. Those prizes will be used to spend on more local food for the next school year.
