The National Weather Service branches in Jackson and Louisville say cold temperatures are expected to continue this week in central and eastern Kentucky following last week’s severe winter weather.

In central Kentucky, a cold front is expected to keep temperatures below freezing early in the week. High temperatures are expected to stay between the low-30s and low-20s through Thursday, with lows expected in the single digits.

Meteorologist Kyle Wilkins says to continue to be careful as the snow melts.

“Definitely be cautious, some areas you walk through during the day may be fine, but then at night, when temperatures drop again, you definitely have to worry about freezing,” Wilkins said.

It’s expected to get warmer on Friday with temperatures getting closer to 40 degrees.

In eastern Kentucky, cold fronts early this week will also knock temperatures down. For the areas north of Interstate 64, that means high temperatures in the mid and upper teens. Highs in the low to mid 20s are expected for the state’s southeastern region.

Meteorologist Philomon Geertson says it’s important to check for any weather updates if traveling.

“Even though the snow showers are likely to be relatively light and minor, because of how cold it could be, there’s potential that there could be some accumulations on roadways, so be mindful of that when you’re out and about,” Geertson said.

Temperatures are expected to get warmer at the end of the week, with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s.
