Lexington officials are gearing up for the coming storm. Wintry weather including sleet, freezing rain and snow is expected to hit much of the commonwealth Sunday and into Monday.
During a press conference Friday afternoon, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton offered some tips for citizens to make it through the storm.
“I want the residents to know that it will always help just to stay off the roads when they're snowy and icy. Look out for their neighbors, especially those that are older. As the weather gets colder, which we believe it will do, be sure to keep your pets inside.”
Temperatures in central Kentucky are expected to stay below freezing for much of next week. The city has already implemented its cold weather plan which extends operations for the unhoused. Rob Allen is the Director of Lexington Streets and Roads. He said crews are working hard ahead of the storm.
“Crews from streets and roads and water quality started pre-treating hills and bridges with salt brine, we're fortunate that this isn't going to start as a rain event, that will allow us to get the salt brine with a mixture of beet heet down.”
Officials are urging everyone to stay off the roads Sunday and into Monday for their own safety and that of road crews who will be out working.
