The commonwealth is about to get what’s expected to be a major dose of winter weather this weekend. Christian Cassell is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Jackson office. He said Saturday is a good day to prepare for what’s likely to begin the following day.
“We're looking at system moving in from the west. It's going to bring kind of a mix of all precipitation types. So we're talking about snow, freezing rain, potentially some sleet and rain, and that will go into Sunday night.”
Cassell said power outages caused by freezing rain and sleet are possible and driving could be dicey. Mark Jarvis is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Louisville office, which covers central and much of western Kentucky.
“Precipitation type will start off as snow and then rapidly change over to a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain. In some areas, the precipitation will continue into Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.”
Cassell and Jarvis agree on something else: folks should have a winter weather plan in place – or make one before Sunday.
