AAA Bluegrass predicts 8 percent more Kentuckians will fly to their holiday destinations between Friday and New Year's Day.

According to the public affairs manager for Triple-A Bluegrass, more Kentuckians will be flying to their holiday destinations this year. Lori Weaver Hawkins said overall, 1.5 million will travel between Friday and New Year’s Day, and 3 percent of them will do so by air – up 8 percent from last year. She said patience should be a priority – even at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport.

“I think sometimes we just take for granted that it's such a nice, smooth process to get through our airport, but it is going to be busier than normal, so you still want to leave extra time to get to your flight.”

Weaver Hawkins recommends leaving early for airports and offered another tip for airline travelers.

“Download the airline app to your phone. That is such a help if there are gate changes, if there are delays or cancelations, you'll get those notifications through that app.”

Weaver Hawkins said travelers shouldn’t leave luggage and valuables unattended and those staying in hotels should be aware of their surroundings – and if possible, try to arrive during daylight hours.
