The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says crashes related to drunk or impaired driving tend to increase during the holiday season.
The office has joined the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs through the new year.
The cabinet says 452 impaired-driving crashes happened during the holiday season over the last five years. That’s resulted in 179 injuries and 11 deaths.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says 1,062 people died in drunk driving crashes in 2022, the year with the most recent data available. That’s the most crashes since 2007.
The cabinet says to plan a way to safely get home after a night out, get a ride with a ride-booking company, taxi, or sober friend and to wear a seat belt while in the car.
It also recommends taking the keys away from anyone impaired and planning to drive themselves, and help them figure out another way home.
