Winter is two weeks away, but you won’t know that by stepping outside Thursday. A late fall cold snap is expected to bringing temperatures at least 20 degrees below normal to much of the commonwealth Thursday. Philomon Geertson is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.
“Behind an arctic front, we're expecting temperatures for today, Thursday, to be in generally in the mid-20s, for highs, perhaps closer to 30 in far southeastern Kentucky.”
Geertson said winds will make those temperatures feel like the mid-single digits and overnight lows will drop to the mid-teens and perhaps lower. He said folks should dress warmly and not forget about their pets.
“Keep in mind pets that are outdoors have a way to keep them warm and dry, and if possible, bring them indoors, provide plenty of food and water. Of course, waters are going to tend to freeze up with how cold it's going to be.”
Geertson said parts of far southeastern Kentucky will be a few degrees warmer.
