Former Letcher Sheriff Mickey Stines was indicted Thursday afternoon by a grand jury on a charge of murder of a public official for the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins.

Thursday afternoon, a Letcher County grand jury returned a charge of murder of a public official against former Letcher Sheriff Mickey Stines in the shooting death of Letcher District Judge Kevin Mullins.

On September 19, Stines allegedly shot Mullins multiple times in the judge’s chambers. Video of the shooting taken by a surveillance camera in Mullins’ office was shown at the probable cause hearing last month, with people in the courtroom gasping and crying. Stines’ attorney, Jeremy Bartley, told WEKU he’d wait until after his client was arraigned to comment. Stines officially resigned as sheriff at the end of September and the Letcher County Judge-executive appointed a new sheriff.
