Rich Storm, commissioner of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, praises the people who make up the volunteer board of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission is holding meetings this week to fill three of nine regional slots on its volunteer board. Rich Storm, commissioner of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, said nominations are made by the state’s sportsmen and women.

“Our commission members’ main responsibility is the recommendation for our regulations. And so they look at a multitude of things, from deer season to slot limits for fish, and the department will make recommendations, and they'll vote to endorse those.”

Storm said the commission, which meets quarterly, can also recommend land purchases and the hiring of the commissioner. He said members have plenty of public interaction.

“They're going to field phone calls related to our regulations, related to department policy, again, seasons, bag limits, initiatives, how we allocate funds.”

Storm said names of the top five vote-getters are submitted to the governor's office and ultimately considered by the state Senate for confirmation. Commission board members are not paid for their work.
