Kentucky State University is sending a mobile health unit to Hazard Community and Technical College Friday afternoon to help residents of eastern Kentucky.
Doctors will provide screenings for metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions including obesity, high blood pressure or high blood sugar. That can lead to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke or type two diabetes.The mobile unit will be parked on the campus of Hazard Community and Technical College.
School President Koffi Akakpo says providing healthcare access to underserved areas is part of the school’s duty.
“We're going to be allowing us to reach people who don't often have access to the service that you and I are so fortunate to have access to. That's where we're placing them strategically, in Hazard”,” Akakpo said.
The unit will open on the HCTC campus starting at 1 p.m. They’re also planning trips throughout west Kentucky, including Paducah, Madisonville and Hopkinsville.
