Longtime political journalist explains what Ky. Governor Beshear brings to the VP table

Over the weekend, Governor Andy Beshear praised Vice President Kamala Harris in speeches in Iowa and Georgia.

A longtime Kentucky political journalist says Governor Andy Beshear is “definitely in the running” for the number two spot on a Vice President Kamala Harris ticket. Al Cross, a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, said one reason for that conclusion is that Beshear was one of the prospects chosen to address rallies in other states over the weekend.

“They are auditioning these candidates. It is a facsimile of the quote many primary and quote that some Democrats wanted to see in advance of an open convention. We're not going to have that for the presidential choice, but we are having it for the vice presidential choice.”

Beshear delivered his speech Saturday at the Iowa Democratic Party’s annual dinner. The next day, he campaigned for Harris in Georgia. Cross said Beshear’s ability to win the votes of moderate conservatives could be very attractive to Harris.

“He has a track record in this state, and he is comfortable talking about abortion as an issue, and that really is the best issue that Democrats have going for them.”

Cross said the “battleground state VP” argument hasn’t been a big factor in the past six presidential elections.
