Community action agencies across the state are accepting applications for the Summer Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. Sarah Hill is the community development manager for the Community Action Council, which serves Fayette, Bourbon, Nicholas and Harrison counties. She said eligible households are those earning less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

“People are having to make tough choices about either letting the electric bill go or buying fewer groceries, not taking care of this or that problem, and especially in the summertime. You know, when that heat is up, it can be a real challenge for low-income folks.”

Hill said the deadline to apply for a one-time subsidy of between $50 and $250 is September 13.

“LIHEAP is a federal program that the individual agencies run, but this is going to be available at community action agencies across the state, and we'll all run on the same schedule, basically.”

People can apply by calling their local community action agency or going online at CAPKY.org.
