Kentucky postal workers have been victim to both burglaries and physical assault. Jeff Sagrecy with U.S. Postal Inspection said carriers have been approached and threatened individually and then there are collection boxes too.
“They are looking for any postal property or items that would help them gain access to any mail receptacles within the area,” said Sagrecy.
Sagrecy said Kentucky hasn’t seen the number of burglaries and robberies as in other states and, in fact, the number of reported mail thefts have decreased some. One of the new technologies to protect collection boxes is to use additional authorization requirements.
Sagrecy said the homeowner video can help.
“Postal Inspectors will spend time in a neighborhood, canvassing, knocking on doors..asking if anyone has camera footage, did they see anything. So, that’s things we do ask, if you witness something..please report it,” said Sagrecy.
In addition to asking carriers to up their awareness while on routes, Sagrecy said steps are being taken to better secure collection receptacles. Often the burglars are looking for checks in the mail.
