Six Kentucky school districts have been awarded a total of more than 6 million dollars in grants from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program. Bell County received the most money – nearly 4.5 million dollars – to purchase 13 electric school buses. Steven Silcox, the district’s chief financial officer, said he got the good news a few days ago.
“Well, I was excited. And you know, we're an impoverished school district. And it really does help, because getting this grant is gonna free up dollars to use for other needs to educate these children.”
Silcox said the district will purchase the school buses from Central State Bus Sales in Lexington, and students could be riding in them next year.
“I think they'll be excited. We've gotten quite a few new buses over the past few years, and they're always excited to get a new bus.”
Silcox said the Blue Bird Vision EVs they’ll receive have 72 seats and a range of 130 miles. He said the Bell school district is impoverished, and the grant will free up funds for other needs of their students.
