The strong storms that blew through the commonwealth knocked out power for many Kentuckians. Poweroutage.US showed at the peak Sunday afternoon, well over 200-thousand customers were without power. With heavy outages in southwest and southeast Kentucky.

Kentucky Power released a statement saying preliminary weather assessments from Sunday afternoon’s storm, showed wind gusts of nearly 50 mph in areas of Knott County with similar speeds clocked in surrounding counties, which were impacted most by this storm system – Leslie, Perry, Pike Floyd, Letcher and Breathitt Counties.

They also warn people to stay away from all downed power lines. These can carry an electric current that can cause serious or even fatal injuries.

If you encounter a fallen wire, keep yourself and others away from it and anything it may be touching.
