Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton resigned Tuesday, hours after a civil suit claiming sexual abuse was filed by a former city employee. He and the city will be represented through the Kentucky League of Cities insurance program.

Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton’s resignation message was read by a city councilmember at a specially-called meeting Tuesday. He said he was shocked at the allegations made by a former city employee and was stepping down due to injuries from a fall off his roof the week before. Because Stapleton was still in office when the suit was filed, he’ll be represented by an attorney through the Kentucky League of Cities’ insurance contract. The city is also a co-defendant. Stapleton and the plaintiff’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment. I’m John McGary.
