As flood anniversary approaches, city of Jackson plans big 4th of July celebration

Jackson's "Pig Out In The Park" celebration Saturday will be the largest gathering in the city since last July's floods.

On Saturday, the city of Jackson, in Breathitt County, will hold its largest gathering since last year’s floods. “Pig Out In The Park” will feature a greased pig contest, inflatables, vendors, live music and more. Jackson Mayor Laura Thomas said she hopes the free gathering will take folks’ minds off that looming anniversary.

“And they'll have some fun things to do with the kids. Get them out in you know, go through the splash pad and listen to music, buy some good carnival junk food, and, you know, just enjoy the time with the family.”

In the past three years, Breathitt County has dealt with the pandemic, a bad flood in February of 2021 and a much worse one last July, when water from the north fork of the Kentucky River damaged more than a thousand homes. Thomas said Saturday’s celebration will end the traditional way.

“Lord willing and the creek don't rise again, we're going to have a big fireworks display. And we just hope that the, you know, the public will get out and that the weather will cooperate, and that we'll be able to have a good time.”

Jackson’s Pig Out In The Park will begin at noon in the city’s Douthit Park.
