The main branch of the Pikeville Post Office was closed Monday after a partial roof collapse Saturday night.

The main branch of the Pikeville Post Office is closed after a partial roof collapse of the building it’s housed in. Nicholas Fleming is the Pikeville fire department’s public information officer. He said it happened Saturday night around 6:30.

“Fire Department units arrived on scene and found that part of the roof exterior had collapsed slightly and give way. Now, mind you, there was a storm around the same time, so that could have been a contributing factor.”

Fleming said firefighters evacuated people from apartments above the post office and no one was injured. Customers are now using the other, smaller post office on Main Street.

“The post office is currently closed and will be until repairs are made on that roof. So, I haven't talked to the property owner myself, but I believe repairs are being made at the moment on that. So, they have a contractor on site.”

Fleming said it’s too early to say when the Thompson Road branch will reopen.
