Low interest loans totaling $250,000 will help new farmers in Wayne County get poultry operations off the ground.

The Kentucky Agricultural Finance Corporation announced the approval of 2-point-3 million dollars in low-interest loans Friday. Among the biggest winners was Wayne County, with 250-thousand dollars for the county’s Beginning Farmer Loan Program. Glen Roberts, with the Wayne County Agricultural Extension Office, said the money will likely help new farmers get into the poultry business.

“It's quite expensive to get into that and helps the young folks beginning farmers we call them young but they're relatively young get into farming in a sustainable way.”

Roberts said the low-interest loans will help new farmers get other loans needed to get their operation off the ground.

“That helps young folks get started that don't have a big down payment, you know, already accumulated to start with, and there is a track record of that working.”

Roberts said the loan will also help aspiring poultry farmers get sales contracts for the poultry they produce.
