Paul Humphrey, deputy chief at the Louisville Metro Police Department, said calls of an active shooter came in to MetroSafe at 8:30 a.m. and officers arrived to active gunshots. He said the suspected shooter is dead and exchanged gunfire, but said he did not know how he died.
Four others were killed. Humphrey said eight people were injured, including two police officers, one of whom was undergoing surgery.
The shooting happened in a building on East Main Street that houses the Old National Bank not far from the Louisville Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.
Humphrey said the shooter had a connection to the bank and may have been an employee there.
Police say the active threat is over but are asking people to continue avoiding the area. Multiple emergency vehicles are first responders are on the scene.
Witnesses who left the building told WHAS-TV they heard gunfire inside the building.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said agents with FBI, ATF and the Department of Homeland Security were on the scene. He thanked LMPD and emergency responders. Beshear said he knew one of the victims.
“I have a very close friend who didn't make it today," Beshear said.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, who survived a shooting attempt last year, called for prayers in the wake of the shooting.
"Without a doubt their actions saved lives," he said of the officers and emergency personnel who responded to the incident.
Officials said they would provide another update Monday at 3 p.m.
