Monday and Tuesday, the Kentucky Blood Center and Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates – or KODA – are joining forces for a blood drive.

KODA’s Crysta McGee said the partnership is a perfect fit.

“Right now in the state of Kentucky alone, there's 1,000 people waiting for a life-saving transplant. And with that life-saving transplant, you need blood. You can't have a transplant without a blood donation.”

Tuesday is not only Valentine’s Day, it’s also National Donor Day. McGee said blood drive donors can also sign up for the transplant registry – and even if they don’t, by rolling up a sleeve, they’re helping that cause.

“And a lot of times transplant patients also have blood transfusions. So without blood donors, we don't have transplants. Without the organ donor, we don't have transplants.”

The Kentucky Blood Center has eight locations around the state, including Lexington, Frankfort, Pikeville and Somerset.
