LG&E KU announce closure of all walk-in offices

Ryan Van Velzer

Kentucky’s largest power provider is shutting down all of it’s in-person offices. Louisville Gas and Electric, Kentucky Utilities is phasing out walk-in services at all of its 26 locations. Customers will be able to make payments and request services online and by phone.

Liz Pratt is Media Relations Manager for the utility. She said there were a number of reasons that led to the closures.

“A decline in customer walk-in traffic, increased staffing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, customers increased use of our self-serve channels that are available 24/7. As well as best practices among similar utilities, moving away from a walk-in center model,” said Pratt.

Pratt said around 70 employees will be affected by the closures.

“Our business office employees possess key skill sets that are valuable in other areas of the company and we’re working with employees to identify those opportunities and match them in areas of interest and availability,” said Pratt.

The first seven offices will be shuttered by March 31st. The remaining locations will close in phases, to be completed by the end of 2024.

Pratt said the company is still evaluating offices to determine what their future use may be.
