The mayor of Flemingsburg has died. Bobby Money was just reelected to the position in November’s General Election. The process to fill the mayor’s seat is already underway.

Joe Dunaway Junior is the City Director for Flemingsburg. He is currently serving as the interim mayor. In an interview with WEKU he said cities have a plan in place for situations just like this.

“Usually, the mayor signs an executive order every year at the beginning of the calendar year in case there is a condition that the mayor is incapable of filling his duties for whatever reason, whether it’s being out of the state or country and unfortunately, death.”

He said there are some actions he will be able to carry out as the interim.

“So right now, I cover the day-to-day duties, everything pretty much in city hall and in the city, I will take care of. The only duties that I cannot take care, because I am not an elected official, would be passing an ordinance or announcing an ordinance.”

Dunaway said those duties would fall to City Council member Ricky Hurst. He said the council will choose someone to finish Mayor Money’s current term, which ends at the end of the year. In January, the council will appoint someone to fill the post until next year’s general election. The winner of that race will serve a shortened, three-year term.
